The Province’s Sweet 16: Our ranking of B.C.’s top senior varsity girls basketball players

THE PROVINCE’S SWEET 16

Honouring the best B.C. senior varsity girls high school basketball players from the 2013-14 season, regardless of age, grade or tier.

(height, position, school, grade, post-secondary destination)

1. Jessie Brown (5-8, G, Langley-Brookswood, 12, Trinity Western) — Dedication has turned her into B.C.’s most consistent shot maker. Added dribble-drive to best three-point touch in province.

2. Aislinn Konig (5-9, G, Langley-Brookswood, 10) — Sweet 16 before 16th birthday. Pac 12 schools in full pursuit. Best lock-down defender in B.C.. Two more varsity seasons left.

3. Lauren Yearwood (6-3, P, Victoria-Oak Bay, 11) — Already an elite scorer, she has now become a truly dominant all-round player. Commitment to team game is an A-plus trait.

4. Tayla Jackson (6-2, P, Langley-Brookswood, 11) — Runs like a guard. Loves to dance off court, but also has best post moves in the province. Completes the Brookswood power trio.

5. Nicole Vander Helm (5-10, G, Surrey-Holy Cross, 11) — Has upped the defensive side of her game this season to go with her fluid, natural scoring skill set. Brings energy to her team.

6. Michelle Bos (5-10, G, Surrey-Holy Cross, 12, Thompson Rivers) — As versatile as she is skilled. A true glue player. Defensive intensity has her guarding oppositon’s top players.

7. Taylor Claggett (5-10, F, Abbotsford-MEI, 11) — Strength in paint, guard skills, but most of all natural ability to score the ball inside, and to pursue rebounds out of her area.

8. Vanessa Gee (5-8, F, PoCo-Riverside, 12, Simon Fraser) — A tower of strength, she is fluid ball-handler who can excel in open floor. Strength helps expand her dribble-drive game.

9. Marissa Dheensaw (5-10, G, Victoria-Claremont, 11) — Plays tough and smart at both ends. Intense with high hoops IQ. Great size for position. Opens up the floor for teammates.

10. Sherrie Errico (5-7, G, North Vancouver-Windsor, 12, Victoria) — Excels at tempo and in traffic. Shooting touch sizzles from distance but mid-range game has opened the door.

11. Avery Snider (5-9, G, Courtney-Mark Isfeld, 11) — Personality-plus player who has devoured the fundamentals. Defence is a plus skill, and making steals has become a trademark.

12. Jessica Hanson (5-9, G, Vancouver-Little Flower, 11) — Dynamic the key word for hoops/track sensation, both shooting and driving. Pull-up shot from mid-range completes her.

13. Emma Piggin (5-7, G, South Kamloops, 12, Thompson Rivers) — Do-it-all talent brings leadership component. Can play anywhere and succeed, and take any defensive assignment.

14. Lauren Bondi (5-5, G, Vancouver-Notre Dame, 11) — Can dominate by filling the hoop, or by dishing. A true point guard. Loves pressure. Intense with a high hoops IQ.

15. Alicia Roufousse (6-2, P, Abbotsford-W.J. Mouat, 11) — Double-double presence after sitting out Grade 10 year. Great length helps make her defence a plus skilll. Runs court well.

16. Ashlyn Day (5-10, G/F, Kelowna-Immaculata, 9) — Youngest Sweet 16 member, noted for natural instincts. Not fancy. Just effective. Makes her noise with a quiet consistency.
